Clear Aligners or Braces: Which is Better?

Did you know that 4 million people across the United States wear braces and that 25% of them are adults?

We’ve all been there – the gap between those two front teeth, or that one stubborn tooth that came in crooked and messed up the rest of your smile. It isn’t fun having to be embarrassed every time you open your mouth – literally.

If you’ve made the decision to get your teeth fixed, but are torn between which type of treatment is right for you, we have the answers.

Whether you want the perfect smile for prom or your wedding photos, here’s everything you need to know about clear aligners and braces, and which is better for you.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are used for minor fixes and improvements such as some spacing issues or crowding of teeth.

While these changes are made at home, another benefit is the “clear” aspect of them. While braces involve brackets and wires that are clearly visible, clear aligners are almost invisible.

These can also be removed to eat meals and brush your teeth; however, they do have to be worn 22 hours a day to work effectively.

Some things to consider are the limitations you will have while using clear aligners. You’ll need to maintain a healthy hygiene regime (expect to brush your teeth after every meal or snack), and to give up hot beverages while wearing them. Drinking anything sugary or colorful likely stain the attachments.

Braces

If you need major work done on your pearly whites, these might be in your best interest. Regular orthodontic visits will ensure your teeth are cooperating with the braces and doing what they are supposed to.

Although they have fewer benefits than clear aligners, in-person visits with orthodontists can offer a closer look that they can’t. Orthodontists can spot bone anomalies or root problems that a mold of your teeth for clear aligners cannot. Taking a look at your teeth and reviewing what work needs to be done gives both you and the dentist a chance to find the right treatment plan for you.

Which is Better?

Clear aligners clearly have more benefits, but those benefits come with a price. On average, clear aligners cost $5,000 whereas traditional orthodontic work can cost anywhere between $1,800 – $5,500. The price will depend on how much work needs to be done; your orthodontist will be able to give you a more accurate quote.

Both oral treatments have their pros and cons to consider when choosing between the two. For adults who don’t want a mouth full of metal and need the flexibility of hygiene care and removability, clear aligners might be for you.For major oral work or a less expensive fee, traditional braces are the way to go.
